If you have a MediaSmart server or other Windows Home Server, you could be soon getting visits from the RIAA! According to a recent article posted at PC World, The RIAA considers storing copywritten digital music files on a shared folder just as illegal as if you actually shared your music with others! The author Travis Hudson goes on to say that:
“The RIAA believes that the act of making copyrighted material available via a “shared folder” is enough to constitute the “right of distribution.” In other words, putting copyrighted material in a shared folder is just as bad as actually sharing it with another individual.”
So, warning to those folks that plan on sharing files and folders via their home server…Beware, the RIAA could be making a visit to your home server soon to look for copywritten material! Always password protect any shares that contain copywritten material! Check out the article at PC World for more details on this interesting issue!

Per say all folders are shared by default, at least there is more than one user with access to them per default. Will the RIAA sue Microsoft in order to make them complaint??
So is the RIAA actually saying that Microsoft is promoting illegal activities, this due to their default settings of all folders … let alone all the companies that offer music downloads such as iTunes of off their web pages. Not sure how you’d be able to offer such service without sharing out a folder …?!?!
Thank god for the RIAA, they really know how to kill other businesses than their own and put a stop to the technology evolution.
How am I gonna stream my favorite tunes to my TV (seems my DMA is out of the question, it requires drive access (shared))- hook my CD player up to the TV??!! Come on … well that is unless the RIAA considers adding DMA accounts to certain folders as not “sharing” them out
RIAA is obviously only concern about holding on to their monopoly at any cost, even despite treating their customers as criminals…
